Professor Series – Part 3

November 19, 2023 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

One of our own! What a privilege it will be to hear from Soh-Hyun Altino on Sunday, November 19th. You see her weekly, but if you didn’t know…

Violinist Soh-Hyun Park Altino is highly regarded as a gifted teacher and a versatile performer of solo and chamber music. Lauded for her “poise and precision,” her engagements have taken her to Brazil, Colombia, Germany, Korea, Venezuela and throughout the United States, and to festivals such as Festival de Campos do Jordão in Brazil, Academy y Festival Nuevo Mundo in Venezuela, Masterworks Festival, and Brevard Music Center, where she has collaborated with many renowned chamber musicians.

Appointed in 2021 to Wheaton College Conservatory of Music, Altino served on the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she received the Phillip R. Certain-Gary D. Sandefur Distinguished Faculty Award and the Vilas Associates research grant and taught for fourteen years at the University of Memphis. The experiences and insights she gained from the overuse injuries during her student years have continually fueled her passion and inquisitiveness for teaching. Deeply committed to teacher training and continuing education, she has presented professional development sessions and clinics for violin teachers and their students, including a talk, “Uncovering Tales of Violinist’s Left-Hand Technique,” at a recent ASTA National Conference.

A native of Korea, Altino grew up in a musical family. At age sixteen, she came to the U.S. and studied with Violaine Melançon at the Peabody Institute where she also developed a keen interest in music theory. Her major chamber music coaches include Anne Epperson and the members of the Peabody Trio and the Juilliard, Concord, Cavani, and Cleveland Quartets. She completed her bachelor’s, master’s and the doctor of musical arts degrees in violin performance at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where she was a student and teaching assistant to Donald Weilerstein. Her recent research activities include her trailblazing work in interpreting Korean traditional sanjo on the violin and promoting new compositions with roots in the traditional music.
